About Laura Benton
I am a board certified Adult Health/Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist, and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse with prescriptive powers. I earned my Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas at Austin.
I have worked in a pain management practice, hospice, and long-term care. I enjoyed working with my patients in all of these settings, but became frustrated when I didn’t have enough time with each patient to share my knowledge of natural self-care while working in a strictly medical venue. So, I decided to create a practice where I can help guide people to take control of their own health and wellbeing.
Before entering nursing, I had a long career as a yoga teacher and licensed yoga teacher trainer. I took my first yoga class in 1972 and studied with varying degrees of intensity until 1994 when I rediscovered Kundalini yoga and began a daily practice that changed my life forever. I have taught yoga and meditation therapeutically for over 20 years and completed certification as a Gong Yoga Therapist to use sound healing in my relaxation and meditation sessions.
I have studied Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga and the world’s oldest preventative health care system, for many years. I love Ayurveda because it brings us back to wholeness through simple changes in diet and lifestyle rather than just managing symptoms. I am trained as an Ayurvedic Healthcare Practitioner through Maharishi Ayurveda.
I also discovered that hypnosis and guided meditation are powerful tools to effect lifestyle changes and I am a member of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. I am actively completing the final stage of hypnosis certification that is only given to professional healthcare practitioners.
Throughout my life I have been an educated listener and problem solver, and my approaches for helping you include conventional western medicine, Ayurveda, hypnotherapy, yoga, meditation, and sound therapy.
