Ayurveda
Ayurveda is the oldest recorded system of preventive health care. Developed in India over 6,000 years ago. Ayurveda, which translates as “knowledge of life” is a natural approach for creating balance and strengthening the body’s healing abilities.
The goal of Ayurveda is to awaken the body’s inner intelligence to create balance in all physiological systems. When balance is achieved, the body’s natural self-repair and self-healing mechanisms are stimulated, and health is the natural outcome.
This balance is accomplished by determining your basic constitution and making changes in your lifestyle and diet to support your health. In addition, time-tested herbal preparations are available to support your health and detox the body of accumulated toxins.
A consultation starts with a review of your health and lifestyle history. I will perform a short physical exam that includes an analysis of your pulse. From this I will determine your basic constitution and identify imbalances that need to be addressed.
We will work together to identify your goals for health and make a plan for simple changes in lifestyle and diet to achieve them. I may also recommend some herbal formulas if they are needed at this time.
After allowing 4 to 6 weeks for the plan to work, we can meet again to make adjustments and add add other approaches.
“With proper diet, medicine is of no need. Without proper diet, medicine is of little use.” – Ayurvedic Proverb
The Three Doshas or Constitutions

The Three Doshas or Constitutions
Ayurveda identifies three basic forces that work at the deepest level of the mind-body system, or doshas.
The Doshas:
- Vata dosha: the fundamental principle of movement, reflecting the air or wind principle in Nature
- Pitta dosha: the fundamental principle of transformation, digestion, and metabolism, reflecting the fire principle in Nature
- Kapha dosha: the fundamental principle of fluidity and structure, reflecting both the water and earth principles in Nature.
When the three doshas are in balance, the body’s inner intelligence is operational and health is optimal. When they are out of balance, the body’s innate self-repair mechanisms are not fully lively and health problems result.
Clinical Hypnosis
Hypnosis is a powerful tool that allows you to rewrite your own story so you can make the changes in your life you desire. I find that hypnosis can help smooth the transition of change while empowering you to take charge of your life.
Hypnosis is a very effective tool for helping with habit change. These can be eating habits, quitting smoking, or changing habits of thought that limit you from achieving your full potential as a happy, healthy human being.
Clinical hypnosis is done by a licensed medical professional such as myself. We begin by determining what changes in your life you would like to make and then crafting positive suggestions to improve your physical health and emotional well-being. While in deep relaxation, you will be able to implement these powerful suggestions during the clinical hypnosis session.

Hypnosis is…
- Learning how to control your mind / body
- Using your mind to help yourself
- Daydreaming with a purpose
- Controlling what you didn’t know you could
- Learning what you didn’t know you knew
Hypnosis makes it easier for people to experience suggestions, but it does not force them to have these experiences.

- Typically remain aware of who / where they are
- Usually remember what transpired during hypnosis

Meditation & Yoga
The word Yoga translates as union and it comes from the same root as yoke, as in yoking two animals together to pull a wagon. In the case of Yoga, we are harnessing the body and mind together to give the spirit a better vehicle for this journey of life. Yoga makes this journey more pleasant, meaningful, and can lead us to places of deep contentment and enlightenment.
I teach and train teachers in both Kundalini Yoga and Hatha Yoga. All yoga works, but some of us resonate better to one form or the other. We will work together to find the practices that work for you and to devise a yoga and meditation practice that fits in with your life and serves your soul.
It has been my experience of practicing yoga daily for over 20 years that yoga will change your life for the better by strengthening and opening up the physical body, harnessing the unlimited power of the breath and ultimately taming the mind. My life has been vastly enriched by my practice of yoga in general and Kundalini Yoga specifically.
“Kundalini Yoga is the science to unite the finite with Infinity, and it’s the art to experience Infinity in the finite.”
–Yogi Bhajan, 10/27/88
For More Information about Kundalini Yoga
There are kriyas that support the liver, balance the glandular system, make you radiant, stimulate the pituitary, increase the flexibility of the spine, and many, many more. Each kriya has a different effect, but all work on all levels of your being. The changes provoked by the practice of a Kundalini Yoga Kriya prepare the physical body and mind to open a meditative internal space. This framework for meditation occurs in numerous ways: opening the joints to facilitate sitting, altering the chemical constituents of the blood via glandular stimulation, and redirecting the mind through concentration and focus.
An important aspect of the power of Kundalini Yoga is that each kriya is whole unto itself, a perfect jewel that acts to create a flow. They are perfectly designed sets of exercises meant to produce predictable and subtle impacts on the total Self. They are a gift of my teacher Yogi Bhajan to humanity and I am proud and delighted to share them.
Meditation is the state of deep awareness that allows you to have a healthy relationship with your mind and to listen to your soul. Meditation is a cleansing process where the subconscious mind releases thoughts. Meditation can frequently be blissful or very cozy as the meditative mind establishes a place of elevated consciousness. Sometimes meditation can be downright miserable, but through the practice your mind clears and eventually settles as thoughts are released.
“A person who has the patience to allow the mind to go through its antics while remaining firmly planted, will experience something. That “something” is different for each individual, but it will be, in some way or another, a reawakening of the self. With this new awareness comes inner change, then outer change.”
~Shakti Parwha Kaur Khalsa
The range and variety of meditation techniques in the Kundalini Yoga tradition is truly extraordinary. Yogi Bhajan passed on hundreds of meditations tailored to specific applications. There are meditations that reduce stress, remove addictions, increase vitality, and clear chakras, to name a few. While there are many, many styles and approaches to meditation, what sets the approach to meditation of Kundalini Yoga apart from others is its precision, effectiveness, and practicality.
“Prayer is when the mind is one-pointed and man talks to Infinity. Meditation is when the mind becomes totally clean and receptive, and Infinity talks to the man.” ~Yogi Bhajan, The Aquarian Teacher Training manual, p. 129
Sound Healing & Gong Therapy
Music and sound have documented healing effects on the mind, body and spirit and have been used since the beginning of humankind to create changes of consciousness and openness to change.
I like to use music, mantra and sound – particularly the sound of the Gong – to help initiate change and facilitate healing.
The Gong is the most powerful sound healing instrument, and I have played the gong worldwide in my role as a teacher and sound healer. I am trained in Gong Therapy and have over 20 gongs that can be a part of your healing journey if that resonates with you.
Western Medicine
As an advanced practice nurse, I can help you navigate the options that Western Medicine offers you. We can discuss what medications and therapies that you are currently employing in your wellness journey and how they can be supported by other complementary approaches such as yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage.
If you have a primary Western medicine caregiver, I can help you communicate with them about your healing journey, and offer insights into the Western medicine system and its approaches to wellness.
Testimonials
Guru Karam has been a teacher of mine for over a decade. When I heard she was giving Ayurvedic consultations I knew she would present the information from a practical and well researched place.
I am typically a healthy person. When I contacted Guru Karam I was sick of feeling sick. Part of my concern were hot flashes which were a daily annoyance but I was also experiencing vertigo, lack of energy and mental fogginess. When I went for my appointment with Guru Karam, she asked me some simple questions about daily habits and diet. Based on my answers she set out a game plan that included a tea and some easy dietary changes. I also ordered a few supplements. The tea is tasty and the changes to my diet were not difficult. After 10 days following her advice I was feeling great and my symptoms were gone. I am grateful for the kind caring advice and for feeling better.
